![]() ![]() I think there is an understanding with the gothic genre that while loss and horror can’t be dissipated, there is a way to make them more sweetly melancholic when contrasted with love and light. ![]() And the loss is so much more poignant when the lighter, happier memories are explored. For example, quite a few of the stories in THEY SAW THE DEAD revolve around a lost family member or love. In this way, gothic horror thrives right in the middle ground. They are binaries and you need one to understand the other. What do you think people can find in the darkness? Why are we drawn to it?įor me, I think it’s impossible to separate light from dark. Our sub-theme this month is sanctuary, and in terms of gothic and similarly dark genres, they can offer some form of sanctuary and comfort for writers and readers to draw on and explore amidst their horror and unease. ![]()
